Why measure argon?

A colorless and odorless gas, argon is the third most abundant component in the atmosphere, making up approximately 0.9% of air content. Argon is commonly used in the healthcare industry, and in manufacturing, where it is often used as an inert shield gas during welding, or to make specialty alloys and titanium. It also has applications in lighting, and food and beverage preservation.

Argon can be isolated from other air components in an air separation unit (ASU), requiring measurements for both purity assay and as a contaminant in other products such as oxygen and nitrogen. As it exists in atmospheric air, argon can be found as an impurity; however, because of its low concentration in the air, this is often at trace or ultra-trace levels, requiring precision argon gas analysis to obtain an accurate measurement.

How gas analyzers work to measure argon

Gas Chromatography separates out the constituent components of a gas mixture, allowing relative concentrations to be determined. Under optimized conditions, it can measure down to parts-per-billion (ppb) levels, making it ideal for high-purity control processes.

Servomex’s Plasma emission detection technology was developed to provide a safer alternative to flame-based sensing for hydrocarbon analysis, and delivers ultra-low measurements of argon. It provides highly sensitive and selective speciation, so is only suitable for trace analysis applications.

Our solutions

The Chroma and NanoChrome are both capable of measuring trace argon in background gases, and trace impurities in background argon, making them highly flexible solutions for nitrogen gas analysis.

While the Chroma is a versatile nitrogen gas analyzer, the NanoChrome is specifically designed for semiconductor applications, with the NanoChrome ULTRA model delivering industry-leading lower detection levels for impurities. Additionally, the NanoChrome and NanoChrome ULTRA can form part of a complete single-supplier solution for the analysis of semiconductor gases.

Our solutions for argon gas analysis

Servomex offers a range of argon gas analyzers for process control, purity analysis, and contaminant monitoring. Our SERVOPRO products, the Chroma, NanoChrome, and NanoChrome ULTRA combine highly sensitive and accurate Gas Chromatography with an advanced Plasma Emission Detector argon sensor.

Product Manager

A highly accurate Gas Chromatography-based gas analyzer, the SERVOPRO Chroma is one of the most versatile solutions available for trace gas measurement.

It offers a choice of non-depleting sensing technologies: Plasma Emission Detector (PED), Flame Ionization Detector (FID) and Thermal Conductivity Detector (TCD).

Most applications will be satisfied by a single 4U rack analyzer configuration, making the Chroma a compact, cost-effective solution for continuous process control or quality monitoring.
