Why measure propylene?

Propylene (C3H6), also known as propene, is one of the simplest alkene hydrocarbons. Uses of propylene include acting as a feedstock for the production of important chemicals including propylene oxide and acrylic acid. Most commonly, it is polymerized to form polypropylene, an important thermoplastic. Measuring propylene, using an effective propylene gas monitor, is essential to ensure process efficiency and a high-quality product in these processes.

The role of propylene in propylene oxide production

Propylene oxide is an important intermediate for the manufacture of propylene glycol. Propylene oxide can be manufactured through hydrochlorination – converting propylene to propylene chlorohydrin and then dechlorinating – or, more commonly, through oxidation of propylene with an organic peroxide. Both methods require accurate gas analysis for safety and quality control.

How propylene gas analyzers work to measure C3H6

The SpectraExact 2500 uses non-dispersive photometric sensing technology to measure propylene in the range required for the specific application.

  • Infrared Single Beam Dual Wavelength (SBDW) sensing is a flexible measurement technology based on the unique light-absorbing properties of some gases, delivering a non-contact, real-time detection of the selected gas’s concentration in a mixture. This technique allows common mode effects such as cell contamination and source aging to be accounted for.
