Why measure combustibles?

A well-controlled combustion process requires an optimized air-to-fuel ratio. If there is too much oxygen, the reaction will be inefficient, and costly fuel consumption will increase. However, low-oxygen, fuel-rich conditions may create dangerous, explosive conditions.

Combustibles are the byproducts of incomplete combustion. To optimize the air-fuel ratio, accurate measurements of oxygen and combustibles are required to ensure safe and efficient operating conditions with minimal emissions.

How gas analyzers work to measure combustibles

Servomex’s Calorimetry sensor uses a four-quadrant bridge track, over-glazed to shield the circuit from the sample gas. Two quadrants are then coated in platinum catalyst; these quadrants form a Wheatstone bridge circuit, with the disc mounted in a cell heated to 300oC (572oF) or 400oC (752oF). When the gas sample is added, any COe present in the sample will combust on the catalyst, which will heat the respective quadrant and alter the Wheatstone bridge output voltage.

The output delivered will be directly proportional to the COe concentration, providing an accurate measurement.

SERVOTOUGH Servomex FlugasExact 2700

Our combustibles analyzer

The SERVOTOUGH FluegasExact 2700 is designed to measure O2 and COe in flue gases for improved combustion efficiency and reduced emissions. It meets the most demanding needs of combustion efficiency applications in the power generation and process industries.

Our solutions for combustibles gas analysis

Since flue gas analysis measurements for both combustibles and oxygen are required to control combustion, Servomex has developed the SERVOTOUGH FluegasExact 2700. This combines Zirconia oxygen sensing with a Calorimetry sensor for combustibles, delivering the measurements required using only a single gas analyzer.

The SERVOTOUGH FluegasExact 2700 measures oxygen and combustibles in the most demanding hydrocarbon processing and power generation applications. It is armed with an integral sampling system custom-designed for operation in some of the hottest and most extreme combustion environments.

Designed for high-temperature processes up to 1750°C (3182°F), the resilient FluegasExact 2700 is ideal for use in extreme heated environments. This makes it the analyzer of choice for a wide range of combustion applications, including process heaters, utility boilers, thermal crackers, incinerators, and furnaces.

Proven, compact technology for combustibles gas analysis

Our Calorimetry sensor measures combustibles (COe) from its exothermic reaction with oxygen over a catalytic platinum surface, which produces carbon dioxide. The heat generated is used to accurately determine the COe concentration.

Calorimetry delivers sensitive, accurate measurements of combustibles

Calorimetry technology – also known as Thick Film Catalytic sensing – is used in our SERVOTOUGH FluegasExact 2700 combustion analyzer to deliver parts-per-million (ppm) measurements of combustibles. It is paired with a Zirconia sensor to deliver a measurement of both oxygen and combustibles from a single analyzer, providing effective combustion control measurements.
